A New Zealand woman is battling to stay in the United States
after her husband has a sex change
December 2007
A New Zealand woman is fighting to stay in the United States after her husband
was legally declared a woman.
Stephan Thomas Calewarts, who also goes by the name Stephanie, was born with
both male and female genitalia, but was listed as male on his birth
certificate. In 2000, he had surgery for health reasons and his male genitalia
were removed.
A court altered his birth certificate to read female instead of male, but that
meant his marriage had to be annulled because same sex marriages are illegal in
his home state of Wisconsin. With the annulment, his New Zealand born-wife lost
her rights to live in the US.
