Trans 101 - an introduction, happening 11 - 1pm on Saturday 18 April, is for people who want to
understand more about the issues faced by transgender and transsexual people.
Questions may include: 'What do all the different terms mean?' and 'How can I
support a trans workmate or family member?' The Human Rights Commission's
Transgender Inquiry will be discussed, along with ways you can support its
actions and recommendations.
Young and Trans workshop is about
working positively with trans youth. From 2pm – 4pm on Saturday 18 April, this
workshop is specifically tailored for youth workers, guidance counsellors,
health professionals and others working with young people. It focuses on
creating schools, youth groups and health services that are positive, inclusive
and safe for trans youth, and will include guest speakers who work with trans
youth and young people who identify as trans.
Jack Byrne - one
of the trans people featured in the Assume Nothing exhibition -
introduces the people photographed by Rebecca Swan and filmed by Kirsty
MacDonald in the Trans Tour
workshop. On Sunday 19 April, 10.30am – 12.00 noon, this event will highlight
the power of sharing stories and images, as trans people define their gender
identity and build support for their human rights. Trans poets, filmmakers,
artists or performers will be invited to talk about their work.
All sessions are free and take place at Te Manawa, 326 Main Street,
Palmerston North. Spaces are limited so please book by Tuesday 14 April - call
06 355 5000 to book.
