GenderBridge is applauding Hell Pizza for its action following complaints about its "you will marry a transgender" misfortune cookies.

The company yesterday issued an apology, saying while it likes to be cheeky, on this occasion it had a "sense of humour failure".

We have caused offense, and contributed to the bigotry that hurts LGBT people all over the world every day, and we regret this," Hell's co-founder Stu McMullin conceded.

GenderBridge Chair Jamie Veale says the support and advocacy group is applauding Hell Pizza for stepping up recognising the harm that transphobia causes globally.

"We acknowledge the incredible public response to the misfortune cookie," she says.

"This shows growing awareness of gender diversity and that the New Zealand public weren't willing to put up with prejudice against transgender people."

Hell Pizza is promising to rewrite the slogan on its next batch of cookies.
