Georgina Beyer will
not seek re-election
28.04.2001
Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer, thought to be the
world’s first trans-sexual MP, has announced she will not be seeking office in
next year’s general election, according to a report on Radio New Zealand this
morning.
Ms Beyer, who won her seat in 1999, was reported to have today
told the Wellington Labour Regional Conference that it was a difficult decision
but "some aspects of being in parliament did not sit well with her
personality".
She told RNZ that after the election she will put her
"energies into her iwi and into raising awareness of the rights of gay,
lesbian and transgender communities".
