Drag contest to boost South AKL scene
A new drag competition will bring together performers in the South Auckland
area and help promote safe environments for all GLBT communities there, say
organisers.
“We need to raise the profile of transgender people in South Auckland, and I
think we can provide great entertainment,” explains Mama Tere Strickland, an
adviser for the Manukau City Council and advocate for transgender people in
the greater Auckland area.
The contest will showcase talent from grass root level to professional and is
open for all to enter, regardless of age, sex, race, and colour, says
Strickland.
“It’s giving people from around the Auckland area an opportunity to strut
their stuff. We’re really hungry for something in the South for our
community. Not all of us want to go into the city – we want something close
to home.”
Contest heats will feature live singing Takataapui drag acts from South
Auckland’s existing stable of talent – and will endeavour to create more
local stars.
The first ever South Auckland ‘Drag Queen Contest’ begins with the first heat
at 10pm, Friday 3rd August. Heat two is on the 17th of August, heat three on
the 31st, heat four on 14th September, and the finals are staged on the 28th of
September. The top two performers from each heat will progress towards the
final. There’s a $2,000 first prize, $400 for second, $300 for third, $200
for fourth, and $100 for fifth place at the final – along with category
prizes and spot prizes.
The venue will be the Wanderers Bar at 123 Coronation Rd, Mangere Bridge.
