Prostitutes have won a battle with the police.
After a review by a board of commissioners, the police practice of maintaining
a register for sex workers will no longer continue.
The move follows the decriminalisation of prostitution last June and means
police will no longer be able to keep prostitutes' details.
National spokeswoman for the Prostitutes' Collective, Catherine Healey, is
pleased about the move. She says it was inappropriate to record the details of
people who are not criminals. She hopes there will be a consistent approach by
police throughout New Zealand in destroying the records.
Ms Healey says sex workers are not criminals and they object to police
recording their details. She says destroying the registers is an
acknowledgement of prostitutes' place as law abiding citizens.
